International award to the new Lithuanian passport
On 9-11 March 2020, annual international conference on the issues of high security printing for Europe, Middle East and Africa (High Security Printing EMEA) was held for the 17th time in Lisbon, Portuguese Republic. Annually, the winners of the regional ID documents (passports, ID cards and banknotes) of the year awards are announced at a special ceremony during the conference.
Two awards in the best new Passport category in Europe, Middle East and Africa were presented to the new Lithuanian Passport and the new Maltese Passport. Service of Technological Security of State Documents under the Ministry of Finance (hereinafter – the Service) was awarded for the new Lithuanian Passport which was launched in May of 2019. The Service was evaluated for the perfect linkage of the Passport’s elegant design with the most advanced technological security features some of which were used for the first time. Transparent window with the laser engraved Passport holder’s image was introduced, as well as multi-colour image of Vilnius Cathedral, Bell Tower and Gediminas Castle fluorescing under UV light, and diffractive optically variable image device – kinegram with 3D effect, an image with changing colours when viewing at different angles, and metallized part of Columns of Gediminas.
Two awards were presented for the best new Belgian national ID card and the best Latvian ID card. Armenian new Dram series also awarded, and the best new banknote award went to the Bank of England for its best new £20 banknote, and to the National Bank of Poland for its 19 Zloty.
During this conference, presentation “The new Lithuanian ePassport” was delivered. Participants of the conference from numerous countries of the world got acquainted with the design of the Lithuanian Passport, integrated most advanced technological security features and document issuing process. Unique system of secure documents and secure document forms of Lithuania was also introduced. Graphic design of the new Lithuanian Passport was prepared by the specialists of the Service. It is printed at UAB “Garsų pasaulis” and the French company “Thales”. Personalisation of these documents is performed at the Identity Documents Personalisation Centre under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, and they are issued at territorial divisions of the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania. Thus, the award received at this conference demonstrates high recognition not only of the Passport’s technological advance but also of the entire system of Lithuanian secure documents and secure document forms.
